January 9, 2009, Newsletter Issue #8: The Economy Has Hit The Book Industry

Tip of the Week

It seems as though every business is suffering in some manner in the current economic climate. Book publishers and bookstores are no different.
Daily we are hearing about publishers’ lay-offs, bookstore closings and retail sales plummeting. Publishers are experiencing minimal buys from the bookstore buyers and bookstores’ customers are buying from www.Amazon.com or at the clubs including Costco, BJ’s or Sam’s Club where they offer deep discounts. Traditional bookstores can’t compete with their pricing.
As an author, what can I do to help my publisher and bookstore sell more books? Offering to do an event, giving the bookstore my e-mail list and contacting my local community of merchants, schools, libraries, groups, or chambers to speak may be a win-win situation. Everyone is looking for places where they can make a buck. So put yourself out there; you may just sell some books.  Visit my publishing tip site for other ideas on how you can sell more books.
